Critical Thinking Institute

In the 1930s, many of the schools that participated in the Eight-Year Study of the Progressive Education Association (Aikin 1942) adopted critical thinking as an educational goal, for whose achievement the study’s Evaluation Staff developed tests (Smith, Tyler, & Evaluation Staff 1942).Glaser (1941) showed experimentally that it was possible to improve the critical thinking of high school students.

Standardized tests have been developed to assess the degree to which a person possesses such dispositions and abilities.

Educational intervention has been shown experimentally to improve them, particularly when it includes dialogue, anchored instruction, and mentoring.

The course facilitator provides guidance and grades student work.

Time commitment: About 8–10 hours per week to complete readings, assignments, discussion and other activities.

Faculty Champions will receive specialized professional development that will assist them in becoming a resource for their fellow faculty and staff, such as attending conferences and other events that focus on critical thinking. Petersburg College places a higher priority to funding faculty professional development for conferences that emphasize critical thinking.

The Critical Thinking Institute is held each fall at St.(Dewey 1910: 6; 1933: 9) and identified a habit of such consideration with a scientific attitude of mind.His lengthy quotations of Francis Bacon, John Locke, and John Stuart Mill indicate that he was not the first person to propose development of a scientific attitude of mind as an educational goal.The seminars are focused on pulling students into deeper, more reflective forms of thoughtful analysis, and intellectual synthesis.Scholars and students from diverse backgrounds work together around the table to connect the dots of our complex, troubled, globalizing world.These events, held on-campus on a rotating basis, are also opportunities for Faculty Champions and Academic Round Tables (ARTs) to report on their experience and progress.To recommend local critical thinking experts in your field who might be willing to facilitate a workshop on developing critical thinking skills in your discipline, please submit the Critical Thinking Expert form.SUGGESTED PRIOR LEARNING This course has been developed at an introductory undergraduate level and is designed to build on knowledge acquired in completing the CIP program.Students wishing to take this course who do not have a CIP should have industry experience and may need to make additional efforts in order to get the most from the course.Critical thought is more than just content - it's about method.During our educational retreats we put ourselves at a critical distance from technology and the digital buzz of post-modern life, we engage in rigorous reading, and convene in student-led round table dialogues.
