Lawton Distinguished Professor in 2004 — the highest honor awarded by faculty, the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2008 and the Graduate Teaching Award in 2017.
A prolific writer, he’s won a Guggenheim Fellowship, grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Florida Arts Council, and in 2016, he received the Florida Humanities Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Writing.

Kirby was 24 when he arrived at Florida State in 1969 after earning a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University.Professor Banks is being recognized for her 30-year career as a reporter and editor.She served as a Regional Editor for Gate House Media from 2001 to 2012 and then as Managing Editor of until her retirement in January, 2015.She was a pioneer in reporting about AIDS during the 1980s, and received awards from the New England Consortium for AIDS Education and Beacon Communications for her work.During her career, she also received awards for editorial writing and for investigative reporting from the New England Press Association.
